A virtual botanical encyclopedia called Plant-Link was created
and installed at
http://www.plantamerica.com in September, 1997.
Plant-Link was fashioned by marrying a U.S.D.A. thesaurus of
88,000 scientific plant names (genus/species) with a multiengine
search tool called (
http://www.metacrawler.com).
Metacrawler integrates search results from AltaVista, Excite,
Infoseek, Lycos, Thunderstone and other search engines.
If you select "Lilium martagon", the Turk's cap lily, Plant-Link
yields 50 documents in 10 seconds specific to the plant. If you
want to propagate the seeds of Meconopsis betonicifolia, the
Himalayan blue poppy, Plant-Link leads to a definitive
approach.
