European Association for Animal Production - Published by Wageningen
Breeding, Production Recording, Health & Evaluation of Farm Animals
(Cattle & Sheep)
NOTE: Pigs not included

Breeding, Production Recording, Health Evaluation of Farm Animals - European Association for Animal Production Focus of this book is domestic farm livestock recording, aimed at improving the management of herds and flocks and increasing their productivity. New strategies for recording are illustrated and the most updated technologies are presented, on the basis of national experiences where such technologies are already adopted.

Cattle are the prominent species, two parts are dedicated to small ruminants recording and to buffalo recording. Future challenges and opportunities for further development of ICAR and the definition of the future scenarios in the animal recording sector are also described.
A special section is dedicated to "Improving the health traits by recording and evaluation", where the past and future of animal recording and the use of animal recording data for genetic evaluation and breeding are defined. Another section deals with the "ICAR Reference Laboratory Network", where the reference systems, the principles and the practices for calibration system for routine milk testing are presented.
Includes EU national statistics data on the "Yearly enquiry on the situation of milk recording in member countries". Describes methodologies used at national level for milk recording, national data for milk production, the costs of recording and the productivity and numbers of recorded cattle at national level (divided by species and by herdbook).

Fertility & Infertility in Pig Herds
Nutritional Approaches to Arresting a Decline in Fertility in Pigs & Poultry

Continued genetic development of pigs and poultry has been the foundation of profitable production within a competitive market. However, the challenges of these production increases have undoubtedly taken their toll on reproductive function in all breeding livestock, with the incidence of infertility increasing at an alarming rate. For example, it has recently been estimated that over 40% of sows are culled due to fertility problems, compared to just 2% with feet and leg issues.
This edited collection of papers is taken from a series of seminars, devoted to bringing together some of the world’s leading authorities in the field of pig and poultry reproduction. The fundamental aim being to re-examine the current trends in productivity in the pig and poultry industries, and to identify nutritional means to improve fertility. It considers the effects of essential nutrients in optimising productivity, and discusses innovative applications of nutrition that will help to enhance fertility. The success of such innovations within entrepreneurial integrated systems is also covered, together with the importance of producing a quality chick and piglet at birth/hatching. Finally, the role of management and the need for least cost production is discussed.
Nutritional Approaches to Arresting the decline in Fertility of Pigs and Poultry is aimed at livestock farm managers, feed industry consultants, vets, nutritionists and poultry producers as well as students and researchers studying animal and applied biological sciences. Fertility and Infertility in Pig Herds - Nutrition and diets for fertile production management of sows and boars

Reference manual for animal scientists, veterinarians and biomedical researchers reflects the fact that since the 1980s the knowledge base about the physiology and biology of the pig has grown phenomenally. The book offers an integrated description of the full scope of current knowledge. The editors have included chapters on the expandin fields of immunology, endocrinology and genetics. Growth, digestion, nutrition, respiration, excretion and reproduction are extensively treated. The final chapter covers the emerging applications of transgenics, metabolite replacement therapy and xenotranslantation (the use of animal tissues in humans).

Anatomy and physiology of human pregnancy from conception to birth

From Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds

    by Alexander Tsiaras, Barry Werth
A child’s growth and development in the womb seen through unforgettable images made possible by revolutionary advances in visualization technology
What’s happening with the baby now? All expectant parents ask this question throughout the exhilirating months of pregnancy. Fuzzy sonograms and doctor’s explanations can provide basic information, but through Alexander Tsiaras’ remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, parents can see, for the first time, the awe-inspiring process of a new life unfolding, in stunning, vivid detail.
The milestones of pregnancy which before could only be described can now be witnessed: the heart’s first beats; the appearance of color in the eye; the emergence of toes and teeth; the brain and nervous system directing development; the first movement of tiny legs and arms; the first indications of gender; the wondrous symbiosis of mother and child; the symphony of the body’s systems coming into being and working in concert. The book tracks the development of a baby from the moment of conception, through the explosively complex early stages of development and the amazing stages of growth as the baby is nurtured by the mother, ending with the joy of birth.
All this is made possible by revolutions in two sciences. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed non-invasive, three-dimensional techniques for visualizing the body. Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in merging these explorations and discoveries. He has created a virtual camera studio that enables him to view a human body or any part of it individually, scan it, enlarge it, rotate it, adjust its transparency so that we can view inside a living being, and light it from any angle.

    Biology and Science of Pregnancy

A Visitor Within - The Science of Pregnancy

by Dr. David Bainbridge, lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College, London
Hardback - 292 pages Approx price: US$21   UK£15  currency calculator

The book covers comprehensive aspects of human pregnancy, ranging from AIDS to zygote, including conception, breastfeeding, gender identity and sibling rivalry. Pregnancy is a uniquely intimate relationship between two people. This book shows how studying pregancy can help us to understand why people behave the way they do and why so many of us want to have children, and even who we are.
    The author writes:
Pregnancy is a uniquely intimate relationship between two people. All of us luxuriate in this relationship once, and women are lucky enough to be able to do it all over again a second time, from the other side. Never again outside pregnancy can we be so truly intertwined with someone else, no matter how hard we try.
I have written this book for people with little or no scientific training who would simply like to know how pregnancy works. How does a woman 'know' she is pregnant? How is a baby constructed? Why doesn't the mother reject this 'foreign' tissue? How do mother and baby survive birth?
Since I started to research the biology of pregnancy, I have found that it has a unique 'feel' to it - it is where our deepest emotions and driest analytical inquiries collide. Working all day in the lab on some placental gene or other, and then coming home to see my wife's pregnant belly swelling ever larger made me realise that pregnancy can be one of the hardest things to be objective about. It is never just a science - it is an integral part of our lives that has been woven into our bodies, our history and our mythology.
